2020 is London’s first community gospel choir for children 7-18 years. The choir’s name is a two-fold representation of their youthful vision to engage, through singing, with the world’s future and the Millennium Development Goals particularly concerning child poverty. The heart of the vision is to spread positive values through music; encourage family singing; and influence children to think about others and the world they live in.
2020 is organised by British Gospel Arts and is the legacy of ‘The Sing Thing’, a part of the London-wide Sing Up Community. 2020 are under the mentorship of the London Community Gospel Choir.
Choral training and development takes place on Saturdays from 12noon to 2pm at our Brookdale House Studios in Waltham Forest, London. 2020 is an advanced choir engaging with repertoire in three-part gospel harmonies. We are always looking for talented children to join our family. Auditions are held at the beginning of January, May and September each year.
Poverty is much more than simply the lack of income. Children living in poverty experience a lack of the material, spiritual, and emotional resources they need to survive, develop and thrive. Wealth does not mean that a household has all it needs to provide what a child needs for a good start in life. It is important to focus on multidimensional child poverty measures that look beyond income and look to a range of children’s basic rights such as health, education, information, nutrition, shelter, water and sanitation. When children are deprived of these rights in the first years of their life, it can limit their potential for physical, intellectual and emotional development. In turn, many children grow up without the opportunity to be healthy and educated and to feel safe and confident.
